Plate opposite page 394, Vol. II, in: Stedman, John Gabriel, 1744-1797. Narrative of a five years' expedition against the revolted Negroes of Surinam, in Guiana, on the wild coast of South America, from the year 1772, to 1777, elucidating the history of that country, and describing its productions, viz. quadrupedes, birds, fishes, reptiles, trees, shrubs, fruits, & roots.
Size of image: 19 x 14 cm
"The 81 plates are dated Dec. 1792, Dec. 1793, Dec. 1794, and Dec. 1795, and 39 have no engraver's name. Thirteen are signed "Blake Sculpt."; besides these, GEB & Keynes (1921) are confident that Blake also engraved the plates opposite volume 1, page 227; volume 2, page 104; and volume 2, page 296, which are not signed."--Cf. Bentley.
Copies are often found coloured; those in which Gold is used may have been coloured early. Keynes (Blake studies , 103) says that, besides the ordinary copies of 21.5 x 26.6 cm., there are copies on large paper of 23 x 29.5 cm. with the imprint in Vol. I as 'London Printed by J. Johnson ... (the Vol. II imprint is corrected as above) and 'the plates admirably coloured by hand'--Bentley.
Of the other sixty-five plates 13 are signed by Barlow, 7 by T. Conder, 3 by Bartolozzi, 2 each by Benedetti and A. Smith, and 1 each by T. Holloway and Perry.
