Rare Books
Plate opposite page 48. Gay, John, 1685-1732. Fables.
Frontispiece and plates facing pages 65 and 129 (Fables 25 and 48) signed: "G. Neagle sc[ulp].", remaining plates unsigned: "plates ... very closely copy ... those in the 1793 Stockdale edition ..." which has plates signed by Blake and others.--Cf. Bentley.
Two octavo editions exist with the same title-page and virtually the same type-setting, page for page, except for the spacing between lines and the setting of leaf A2. In the smaller edition, the last line of text on A2 recto (page [iii]), excluding footnote, ends "as he pro-" and the catchword is "bably"; in the larger octavo edition, the last line ends "is not known." and the catchword is "The". In the smaller edition pages 138, 142 and 143 are misnumbered 140, 144 and 145 respectively and leaf Q3 is unsigned. In the other octavo edition pages 138, 142 and 143 are numbered correctly, but page 242 is misnumbered 422 and leaf Q3 is signed. Leaf R4 is unsigned in both editions.
Blake Suppl. no. 461 is the large octavo edition.
